Checking Your Cars’ Motor Oil

Checking the Oil:

Before you begin to check your oil level, first ensure that your car is parked on a level area. It’s more accurate to check the oil in a car whose engine is cold, and safer from burning yourself as well. (Though some car manufacturers recommend checking the oil on a warm engine, check your owners manual or with the manufacturer before checking on a cold engine.) Open the hood of the car and locate the oil dipstick. With a cloth or napkin, wipe the dipstick clean. After it is cleaned, replace the dipstick completely into the engine and once again remove the dipstick. Look at both sides of the end o the dipstick. There will be markings on the bottom end of the dipstick that will tell you how much motor oil is on the engine or if you need to add more.  Remember to check your motor oil often as this is a very crucial fluid for appropriate performance and critical to your car care routine and will help you to avoid car repair expenses later.

Adding More Oil:

Oil comes in a variety of ‘grades’. Check the owners’ manual to know the appropriate oil grade for your car’s engine. If you are unable to locate this information, your local car repair and parts shop can assist. The experts there can let you know the grade and weight of oil you need and sell you the amount you need as well. Once you have the appropriate oil for your car, remove the oil filter cap, which is typically found at the top of the engine. Use of a funnel will help you to avoid spilling the oil. It is recommended that you only add ¼ to ½ of a quart of oil at a time. Wait for a few minutes and then recheck the oil level once again. Add more oil as needed, be careful not to overfill as this can cause damage to your car’s engine. Also when checking your oil, you should check the color. Dark brown or black is normal colors for motor oil. But if your oil appears whitish or lighter color, this could be a warning that coolant or antifreeze is leaking into the oil or if any water is noticeable you should have your car towed (not driven) to a repair shop for professional repair and analysis. If you notice the color is fine and the level is fine, then you can replace the oil filter cap and consider your oil check for your car care complete.

How to tune up a used car

Vehicles produced before about 1980s generally have simple ignition systems that can be maintained by local mechanics. The following steps can help you to maximize power, decrease fuel consumption and decrease the probability of overheating.

To maintain your car in a proper condition you should read attentively information about firing order, ignition point gaps, spark plug gaps and timing advance given in your car manual or some other reliable sources.

tune up a used car

If you want to tune up your used BMW X5, Lexus X350, take a look at the following tips.

So, to tune up your used vehicle, purchase replacement spark plugs, ignition leads, ignition points, condensers as required.

The first point you should start with is cleaning engine. Use a marker to number  the spark plug leads if they have not been yet. You will be able to wipe it off later if you want.

Grip each spark plug lead at the plug end as close to the engine as possible  and pull it straight out. In such way you will prevent  the connector from damaging. Do not forget to use an appropriate spark plug wrench to weaken every spark plug and remove them out.

Control the spark plugs. Do not re-use the electrodes and the insulators if they are strongly rounded off or damaged.

The plugs should be scratched with a wire brush and then rinsed with kerosene or petrol and afterwards to be set to dry if you want to re-use.

Examine the distributor cap’s interior  for moisture,  cracks, carbon tracks and dirt. If you find any carbon tracks or cracks, you should replace the cap.

After removing the ignition points check them for rust and precipitates. If  pitting is slight it is normal and you  may dress it  off with a file. Then you can re-use the points.

Search the centrifugal ignition advance weights. You can see them below the baseplate. Give them a light push with a screwdriver to be sure they have not stuck up. There you can see  a hole marked “Oil” to grease them. Several drops of engine oil will be enough. If there is any oil spillage wipe it  up.

Substitute the points on the baseplate with washers in the proper  places. Then  the screws should be put in tightly but you should not tighten them fully yet.

The next step is to rotate the motor clockwise with the spark plugs out.

Install a feeler gauge to the right points gap and wipe it perfectly. After placing in the gap of the points you should  tighten the points screws. If the gap is not correct you should do it once again until it is correct.

There are different ways to tune your used and old vehicle up. Find the proper way that it suits your car. Look through different journals and find information that may help you manage with this process. Consult your local mechanic and ask him for advice.  You also can find a lot of useful  recommendations on the Internet concerning tuning your new , Ford Mustang on any other car.

Useful Tips to Save Fuel When Driving

Buying a car people want to get comfort as well as save money. One of the numerous ways to save your budget is to decrease fuel consumption. It is not difficult to do. You should just read the following tips.

fuel consumption

When  you fill up your car  with fuel, it is necessary to  fill up the half and try to hold your tank above one quarter full. On seeing  that fuel runs low, pay attention if the fuel pump works properly .

Never buy  fuel of a bad quality. You cannot find  two fuels of  the same quality, and when you fill up your, BMW or Mercedes, try several types of fuel and find one appropriate for your vehicle.

We recommend you to use a synthetic oil additive when you are changing your oil. This can save your fuel consumption by up to 15%. Do not forget to read the instructions given by  your car manufacturer and follow them.

Get your oil changed regularly because if the oil is dirty all your tries to minimize fuel consumption will be vain. When oil gets dirty it can do harm to your engine’s life.  If you use natural oil, try to select the lightest one. The lighter oil you use the better your car works. So 5W-30 is preferable rather than 15W-50.

When you use the air  conditioner during driving around the city it makes the engine  work harder and fuel consumption increases. But some researches show that when you are driving at highway especially in a speeds car sometimes fuel consumption increases when the air conditioner is on.

You can control the amount of fuel consumed  by monitoring how hard the engine works.

Air conditioner, speed and  acceleration, all of them influence your car’s work but they are not exact indicators. You should  monitor the revolutions per minute your engine is doing at. It is like feeling  your pulse to get to know if your heart is working hard. Find those  revolutions per minute ranges that are ideal for your vehicle.

If you discover that  the engine is running at more than 3000 R.P.M.s,  you are probably accelerating at an unnecessary low gear. In this case you should ease the pedal off and let the engine run at a higher speed at lower revolutions per minute .

How  to monitor your revolutions per minute? There is a left gage near the speedometer which is called the tachometer. The tachometer measures your revolutions per minute at x1000.An ideal  and more efficient RPM area is between 2000 and 3000 revolutions per minute. Though try to be below 2000 if it is possible and no more than 2700 in a case if it is necessary. It may happen when you are  driving uphill   from a stopped position. You should find your comfort zone.

So, if you want to save as much fuel as possible while driving your Dodge Grand Caravan, Mazda, Nissan, Ford, you should follow the recommendations given above. These tips will help you decrease fuel consumption and enjoy driving your car.

How to plasti dip a car

In this article we will teach  you how to add a unique look to your vehicle using plasti dip. What is plasti dip? It is a substance used for vehicles and wheels  to protect their initial surfaces in the winter season. It is a product of  a high quality which  is resistant to cold,  salt, winter ice or  sun fading. It is also a reliable though removable stuff that will slough off  after a long period of time. The most important thing is that you can use it to show a matte and clean appearance for your vehicle whereas completely continuing to be free of harm.

plasti dip

The plasti dip is such a covering that forms a separate layer any surface, even car rims.

The first thing you should do is to find a suitable place. The area should be large enough to contain the vehicle and is ventilated well. It may be an open garage, though if you have no such opportunity, a good place may be out-of-doors somewhere in the shade is.

You should clean and wash the surface properly. The surface must be very clean before putting any type of plasti dip to the vehicle.

Of course, the surface MUST be not only cleat but dry as well. After having cleaned the surface, dry it with a cloth. Do not use  paper towels. These may create scratches.

Then shake the can with spray vigorously. Shake it for about  1 minute.

Then paint in segments.  For instance, apply the first layer to the roof, while it is drying, apply the  first layer to the hood and so on. You may start from any section you wish. Avoid touching  plasti dip on a vehicle at any point during it is drying not to have any mispainted spots. It is safe to touch after solidification. You are recommended to put on  eye protection and a mask.

It is very significant for the first layer to be a light dusting because this layer is the bonding one. That  means it will be a 50 -60% transparence. This will let the next layers stick to the paint. Plasti dip should dry approximately15-30 minutes  before applying the next layer

Then apply some more layers. The more layers the more  longevity of plasti dip. In the whole the amount of layers is 4 or 5.

After the last layer is added, instantly remove all painter’s tape that you  have used to protect areas from being covered with plasti dip. You should do  before the substance dries.

Then you will need about 4 hours to wait until plasti dip fully cure.

You can also use plasti dip for applying on  car accessories.

If you want to plasti dip rims, the cleanest and easiest way is to remove the wheels from the vehicle. Find out instructions on how to remove wheels from your BMW X5, Dodge, Hundai or Audi and follow them properly. It is fully voluntary to coat the wheels’ rubber since plasti dip is simply removable. Do not forget that the surface you want to plasti dip should be clean.

How to Enhance Your car’s Horsepower

Car owners are generally more eager to make gas mileage better and save some money than to increase performance. If you wish to let out your car’s inner hot rod, you can do it in different ways. Reading these tips you will be able enhance the horsepower as well as maximize the speed and performance.

increase horsepower with performance

The first step is to reduce the weight of the vehicle. The easiest way to do right now for increasing the horsepower is making your car as light as possible. You should get rid of all unnecessary clutter from your vehicle and also strip your car down as much as possible for the best performance.

The second step is upgrading to a free-flowing exhaust system. If you upgrade to a high-performance exhaust system it will increase your car’s horsepower by a degree of 5-10 on some natural aspiration cars (like Ford Mustang).

It’s a general misunderstanding that oversized piping influences back pressure negatively ,as a result you lose power and low-end torque. Actually, the most part of engines choose rather the most free-flowing system, from the standpoint of header, intake and exhaust.

The next step is using test piping. First of all you should measure the diameter of your catalytic converter’s pipe and then replace with bigger exhaust piping. Probably you can have it installed at the shop paying some money, or you can do it yourself. For this purpose you should cut the old exhaust piping and leave several inches to weld onto.
Also you need to buy a free-flow aftermarket air filter. It should fit your car and be installed to slightly enhance your HP. This change is not very big, but it’s a very good way to make sure that your car will be working at the highest-possible degree.

Bear in mind that in fact a lot of after-market air filters will let larger particulate matter pass into the oil filters and engine, mainly if maintained wrong, and consequently will spray oil into the intake. As a result the mass air flow sensor can be damaged or even destroyed by the oil from the filter.

For the further increasing your car’s horsepower study supercharge and turbocharge options. If you install a turbocharger in a smaller-block or a supercharger in a large-block engine, you will save a lot of money because it will rebuild your engine completely and basically upgrade the stress-bearing components of it.

If you are going to install a supercharger in your vehicle , you should consider the following variations:

The oldest type of supercharger system are root superchargers. They are generally the cheapest and very popular among racing cars.

Twin screw superchargers are designed to pull air through lobes, which becomes compressed in a cone-shaped tapering appliance and trapped in the rotor housing. They are illegal in almost all states and they tend to be exceedingly loud.

There are some more types of superchargers and turbocharges. You can find some information on the Internet or check Kijiji options and choose BMW X5, Nissan Juke, Audi Q2 or other crossovers to increase their horsepower. It is also possible to increase horsepower of sedans and hatchbacks.
