What Should You Do if You Have an Accident while Driving a Rental Car?

Many of us know the routine if you’re in an accident with your own car. Matters become more complex when you’re driving someone else’s car. The greater question is what to do when you get into an accident when driving a rented car? We’ll give you an overview of the right steps to take if this happens to you.

Call the Police or Emergency Services

If someone is in need of medical attention, the first thing to do whether you’re in your own car or a rental car is to call 911. If someone is injured, have them evaluated. You can deal with the insurance company later.

If there is no urgent need for medical attention, you should still call the police. The police will write out an accident report. This will provide a neutral third-party account of the accident. Ask for an accident report even if you’re dealing with a hit and run in a parking lot involving your rental car.

Document Everything

Take notes regarding the situation. Who was involved? What are the names of the witnesses, including people on the side of the street? What happened? What are the driving conditions? This is also the time to take pictures of everyone and everything. Take pictures of the damage and potential injuries. This must happen in addition to exchanging insurance information. And keep all of this information so that you can give it to both the insurance company and the car rental company.

File an Accident Report

You’ll need to notify the rental place of the accident. This is the first step to filing an accident report with the rental agency. If you can’t drive the car, they may be able to make arrangements for a replacement vehicle. They’ll make the plans regarding towing and repairing the vehicle. If you have car rental insurance through the rental place, this step is still necessary, though you may not need to deal with any other insurer.

Call Your Insurer

This step depends on the type of car insurance you have. You may need to call your auto insurance company; they may cover the damage to the rental vehicle. For example, if you have comprehensive and collision insurance on your own car, it may cover damage on the rental car as well. If another person was severely injured in the vehicle, whether in the other car or a passenger in your rental car, your personal car insurance’s liability coverage will likely kick in. This type of liability coverage is rarely provided by credit cards when they provide insurance for rental vehicles.

Seek Legal Advice

You may find that the rental car company insurance often doesn’t cover large vehicles, whether it is a large truck or passenger van. Credit card insurance typically doesn’t cover the rental of expensive luxury vehicles, though this may end up excluding SUVs, too. If you use your business credit card to rent a vehicle, they may say their insurance only covers the vehicle if it is truly business travel. Your insurance may exclude certain countries from coverage, or there may be conflicts between insurers as to who should cover the accident. In these cases, it would be better to contact a Chicago accident lawyer.

The good news is that you probably had some sort of auto insurance coverage when you were in the accident. Assuming everyone is OK, start making the right calls so you can get back to your trip as soon as possible.

Tips for buying a used car

Tips for buying a used car

If you’re a first-timer and not familiar with all the workings that make a good car, read on. We’ll try helping make your shopping experience less overwhelming by equipping you with tips for getting what you need. If done right, it’ll be as easy as microwave food or downloading a Toronto Massage App on a day you don’t want to be stressed.

What vehicle do you want to buy?

Before going to a car dealership, know the type of vehicle you need to buy. That will make the selection process easier. It also cuts down the time it takes to get what you’re looking for and drive out with it. Check out the expected market value of the second-hand car you want to buy. Find out the specifications of the car and what an excellent running second-hand vehicle should contain.

Write down the questions you ought to ask. You can consult a blog with this information or ask a friend who’s familiar with the workings of a vehicle to explain to you what you need to look out for. That way, you’ll be able to make an informed decision.

Don’t go alone

Having someone with you helps keep you in check. Salespersons can be very persuasive and derail you from your goal. For them, it is about getting a commission out of every sale and won’t necessarily suggest what’s best for you. When you take a friend along, preferably someone more experienced than you are, they can note when the deal is too good to be true.

Look up the vehicle history report

If you’ve spotted the car you want to purchase, do a quick search on Carfax or AutoCheck to see if the vehicle is worth the investment. That way you’ll be able to know if the car was involved in any serious accidents or had a clean title.  You’re also able to see how many times it changed hands or if the car lot has spun the odometer back.

Don’t get emotionally attached when negotiating

The seller can know when you’re desperate to buy a car, and will most likely exploit it to their advantage. Despite how you feel about a vehicle you wish to purchase or how badly you need it, don’t let your real emotions show. Always keep in mind that even if they don’t give you the deal you want, there are other places you can go. Having the power to walk away puts you at an advantage as the salesperson will likely give you the deal you want for fear of losing a client.

Bring cash

Having the money makes the decision final. You don’t have to worry about a loan or asking the dealer to hold the car for you until you’re ready. The dealership is likely to adjust the deal if you show your commitment to purchase immediately.

Test drive

Select a route that has a mix of what your car will typically be driving. Check for blind spots, acceleration, how it goes round corners, the brakes, and the mechanical condition- can you hear any unusual noises or vibrations as you drive? The radio will have to be off to notice this; you can check that later. You can then ensure if the seatbelts work, the leg room at the back seat and the cargo capacity.

Checking Your Cars’ Motor Oil

Checking the Oil:

Before you begin to check your oil level, first ensure that your car is parked on a level area. It’s more accurate to check the oil in a car whose engine is cold, and safer from burning yourself as well. (Though some car manufacturers recommend checking the oil on a warm engine, check your owners manual or with the manufacturer before checking on a cold engine.) Open the hood of the car and locate the oil dipstick. With a cloth or napkin, wipe the dipstick clean. After it is cleaned, replace the dipstick completely into the engine and once again remove the dipstick. Look at both sides of the end o the dipstick. There will be markings on the bottom end of the dipstick that will tell you how much motor oil is on the engine or if you need to add more.  Remember to check your motor oil often as this is a very crucial fluid for appropriate performance and critical to your car care routine and will help you to avoid car repair expenses later.

Adding More Oil:

car repair

Oil comes in a variety of ‘grades’. Check the owners’ manual to know the appropriate oil grade for your car’s engine. If you are unable to locate this information, your local car repair and parts shop can assist. The experts there can let you know the grade and weight of oil you need and sell you the amount you need as well. Once you have the appropriate oil for your car, remove the oil filter cap, which is typically found at the top of the engine. Use of a funnel will help you to avoid spilling the oil. It is recommended that you only add ¼ to ½ of a quart of oil at a time. Wait for a few minutes and then recheck the oil level once again. Add more oil as needed, be careful not to overfill as this can cause damage to your car’s engine. Also when checking your oil, you should check the color. Dark brown or black is normal colors for motor oil. But if your oil appears whitish or lighter color, this could be a warning that coolant or antifreeze is leaking into the oil or if any water is noticeable you should have your car towed (not driven) to a repair shop for professional repair and analysis. If you notice the color is fine and the level is fine, then you can replace the oil filter cap and consider your oil check for your car care complete.

tune up a used car

If you want to tune up your used BMW X5, Lexus X350, take a look at the following tips.

So, to tune up your used vehicle, purchase replacement spark plugs, ignition leads, ignition points, condensers as required.

The first point you should start with is cleaning engine. Use a marker to number  the spark plug leads if they have not been yet. You will be able to wipe it off later if you want.

Grip each spark plug lead at the plug end as close to the engine as possible  and pull it straight out. In such way you will prevent  the connector from damaging. Do not forget to use an appropriate spark plug wrench to weaken every spark plug and remove them out.

Control the spark plugs. Do not re-use the electrodes and the insulators if they are strongly rounded off or damaged.

The plugs should be scratched with a wire brush and then rinsed with kerosene or petrol and afterwards to be set to dry if you want to re-use.

Examine the distributor cap’s interior  for moisture,  cracks, carbon tracks and dirt. If you find any carbon tracks or cracks, you should replace the cap.

After removing the ignition points check them for rust and precipitates. If  pitting is slight it is normal and you  may dress it  off with a file. Then you can re-use the points.

Search the centrifugal ignition advance weights. You can see them below the baseplate. Give them a light push with a screwdriver to be sure they have not stuck up. There you can see  a hole marked “Oil” to grease them. Several drops of engine oil will be enough. If there is any oil spillage wipe it  up.

Substitute the points on the baseplate with washers in the proper  places. Then  the screws should be put in tightly but you should not tighten them fully yet.

The next step is to rotate the motor clockwise with the spark plugs out.

Install a feeler gauge to the right points gap and wipe it perfectly. After placing in the gap of the points you should  tighten the points screws. If the gap is not correct you should do it once again until it is correct.
